Stephen Staunton
The Artist
Stephen has been attending Headway East London for over 10 years. Despite being unable to hear or speak Stephen is an expert communicator, making himself understood through his own unique vocabulary of gestures and noises. His artwork is immediately recognizable – patchwork quilts of colour and texture, meticulously painted with a small brush. I once gave Stephen a photograph of himself to paint as an experiment – the result was a square head, square eyes, square hand, square fingers. We often wonder if this is how he sees the world, in his own kind of squarevision.
