We're getting a pop up shop!
Brain injury survivors are setting up shop in Hoxton to exhibit artwork, host events, sell gift products to raise funds... and spread a little love in the community!
(11 April 2017) – We are so excited to unveil our first ever pop up shop next month in Hoxton! Open from Monday 8th to Friday 12th May, Submit To Love invites Londoners to learn more about the lived experience of brain injury survivors through onsite exhibitions, interactive workshops and creative events. Named after the charity’s art studio, the shop also provides the opportunity to buy gift products designed by brain injury survivors, raising much needed funds for charity.
The opening will coincide with Action For Brain Injury Week (8-15 May); a national campaigning week to raise awareness of brain injury. Situated on the same road as our day service, the shop will encourage our members to directly contribute throughout the week; showcasing the skills and talents they possess in addition to helping to raise awareness of the effects of brain injury.
Speaking about the impending launch, Headway East London’s Chief Executive Anthony Bonfil says: “We’re incredibly excited to open Submit To Love to the public this May. This provides our members with an opportunity to share their knowledge and talents with the wider community, in addition to encouraging a more open dialogue about the effects of brain injury for both survivors and those close to them.”
Speaking about the shop’s intriguing name, Anthony adds: “Submit To Love was actually coined by one of our own members and voted as the name of our art studio by the membership; it captures the feeling people get when they enter that creative space. In testing times, we feel it’s more pertinent than ever that we encourage this positive attitude, in an effort to tackle discrimination faced not only by those with disabilities but beyond that within our local communities”.
All proceeds from event tickets, artwork and gift product sales will support the running of the charity’s service and the 700 individuals currently supported by them. The running costs of the shop have been generously sponsored by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors.
Alison Eddy, brain injury specialist and Managing Partner for Irwin Mitchell in London says: “Through our work we’ve seen first-hand the devastating effects that brain injuries can have. Headway East London provides a vital service to people with brain injury and their families, not only for the support they receive but for the opportunity to meet others living with the same condition, giving them the chance to talk about their feelings with someone who understands.
She adds: “For many of our seriously injured clients, early rehabilitation is crucial to improving their prospects of a better recovery, which is why we are proud to support initiatives like ‘Submit To Love’ which involves art therapy and aims to help create a better public awareness of brain injury.”
Submit to Love will open 8th – 12th May from 11am-7pm at 93 Kingsland Road, Hoxton. To find out more visit the shop page here
