Get involved

As Submit to Love Studios relies heavily on collaboration, we welcome groups and individuals to work with us in all sorts of capacities. From running or participating in workshops, to volunteering or taking up a residency - there are many ways to get involved.

We are always on the lookout for creative volunteers to help within the studio. Working closely with our artists, they will have the opportunity to learn new practices and gain an insight into life after brain injury.

Volunteer at the art studio

"Volunteering in the art space, I get to see people expressing themselves in different ways. It gives me an insight into what they like, and how they experience the world.” - Clare

Volunteers are vital to the work that we carry out in the studio day-to-day. If you're interested in giving up some of your time, you can do this by applying to be a volunteer at Headway East London (link below) and specifying your preference for the art studio.

What to offer something else? If you would like to offer supplies, skills and expertise to the studio please get in touch.

Collaboration is very important to our artists and the studio, and we are constantly looking to build new relationships and strengthen partnerships. We have been lucky enough to welcome many talented creatives to our studio over the years, in addition to offering our own skills and expertise to others.

Join a workshop

We have more than ten years’ experience in facilitating mosaic sculpture and mural workshops with our artists and the public.

These workshops make for fantastic, unique team-building days and those involved will have the opportunity to collaborate with our artists, benefiting from their guidance and inspiration.

As well as gaining new technical and creative skills, participants will learn about life after brain injury and gain insight into how our artists come to express their remarkable talents in spite of profound disabilities. We pride ourselves on the confidence-enhancing qualities of our workshops and on the positive outcomes of the experience, which are life-changing for some.

A typical workshop will take place over four days spanning several months. We’ll meet ahead of the time to discuss the concept and design of your artwork. For more information on dates and prices, please email.

Host a workshop

Matt Raw ceramics workshop

Over the past few years we have welcomed a number of creatives to our studio to share their skills with our own artists.

Typical workshops have included ceramics, carnival floats, life drawing, collage making, and animation. These can last anywhere from one day to six weeks.

We firmly believe this method of co-production is beneficial to both sets of artists; each one has inspired a fantastic body of work (both from the workshop itself and in future works inspired by the new methods and individuals involved).

If you would like to offer your time please get in touch by emailing to discuss timings and ideas.

During 2017 we are looking for an artist to work in our open-access art studio, creating artworks in response to and in collaboration with our members.

Artist In Residence Program

This is a special opportunity to gain an insight into working with a talented group of artists from a diverse range of backgrounds who have overcome big challenges to create their art.

Artists will have full access to our studio over a period of eight weeks (2 days a week), and will be paid a one-off fee to contribute towards their time and materials.

Current opportunities

Artist In Residence, Headway East London

Headway East London is a charity supporting people affected by brain injury across 13 London boroughs. Our Hackney-based Day Service is home to Submit to Love Studios (, a unique community of self-taught artists, who themselves are brain injury survivors.

The artists accessing the studio work collaboratively on a range of group projects as well as their own individual artworks. Up to fifteen artists access the studio on a daily basis, where they are supported by studio staff and volunteers.

We are looking for a practicing artist or maker to work in our open-access studio over a period of eight weeks, using the space to create new work and to create work in collaboration with our members. We are particularly seeking someone who will bring new skills to our studio space and is able to effectively communicate these skills to our members - through workshops, demonstrations or one-to-one sessions.

This is a special opportunity to gain an insight into working with a talented group of artists from a diverse range of backgrounds who have overcome big challenges to create their art.

The Residency will run for an eight-week period, with the selected artist working for eight weeks, 2 days a week from 10am-3.30pm in our Hackney studio. There is a £1400 artist's fee, which will cover any additional material costs. We ask that artists submit a proposal for the course of the residency within their applications.

Submissions: If you are interested in applying for this unique opportunity please submit a completed application form and ethnic monitoring form, along with up to 5 images of your own artwork in jpeg format.

One of the key aims of the studio's work is to give our artists as many opportunities to celebrate and further their talent. With this in mind, we developed our 'Sponsor an Artist' scheme, open to both individuals and organisations.

About the scheme

- Sam Jevon, 'Pictures in Detail', 2016

'Sponsor an Artist' is a bursary scheme allowing you to directly support an individual to develop their work and build confidence as an artist. This will allow them to:

  • Experiment with new materials
  • Gain a higher level of self-belief in their creative work and their status as an artist
  • Open up creative opportunities outside of Submit to Love Studios including holding exhibitions of their artwork
  • Experiment with new techniques and approaches
  • Collaborate with external creative professionals

Benefits & costs

Sponsoring an artist isn't a one way street - we also want you to benefit from the partnership.

  • As thanks for your support you will be invited to the studio to meet and spend time with the artist you sponsor.
  • You will also receive an original piece of their artwork.
  • Your name will appear in a list of art studio sponsors on the Submit to Love Studios website
  • You will be linked to exhibitions of the artist’s work.

How much does it cost? You can sponsor one of our 40 talented artists for one year for £1,200 (just £100 per month!).

If you would like to sponsor an artist or have any questions, please contact us on
